As many of you know, I work with students of all age groups, helping people transition. Whether it is how to get out of a dead end job or mastering that math class in order to graduate, I have decided that many of our students are just uncertain of which road to take so they wind up standing still. I am certain some of that is fear and lack of knowledge but sometimes it has more to do with not being comfortable with being uncomfortable.
In my fitness classes that I teach, I always try to emphasize that pain is part of the process because change is painful. One thing I fail to talk about is self-awareness. How can you argue and talk back to that voice in your head if you don’t really understand where that voice is coming from? That voice that says you a failure or you don’t know what you are doing… how do you silence it? You have to be your very own drill sergeant to quiet that noisy-naysayer. In a staff meeting today I came up with the “mapping-u.com” phrase because we as humans have verbal goals and plans but we often need a map to get there… and who is going to draw that map, you ask? Well sometimes you need a little help with that, which is why I bring my counseling side to the music coaching group. The only way you music and songs will reach others is by you mapping out a way to get it there. Not having a fantasy, but really putting a plan of action together and sticking to the plan. Break everything down into the baby steps and check those steps off as you go. I do realize that the world is full of dreamers with a lower number of doers. The question is, which one are you? If you are a doer, your brain is already churning! Let me know how I can help because it does not have to be a lonely road.

Who Might You Be? According to businessdictionary.com the definition stated for “branding” is the process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product in the consumers' mind… Branding aims to establish a significant and differentiated presence in the market that attracts and retains loyal customers. Why do you think this would be important to you as a singer, songwriter, producer or musician? One word that comes to mind for me is “fan”. In the world of marketing for your business, it can mean much more and you can read more about business branding by visiting the website www.businessdictionary.com. I always talk about treating your music endeavors like a business and that can be difficult for the creative types but it is very important for your fans. If you get the chance, come back to view the video for this and remember to embrace who you are with all of your faults. Our music is like a baby we gave birth to. No one can tell us our "baby" is not perfect because we were involved in the creation of it. Like our children, we can overlook the true flaws and "errors" present because we but on blinders to the flaws. We are not perfect, we cannot produce anything that is perfect but we can always strive for and achieve perfection.
Don't get me wrong when I say "we cannot produce anything perfect" because I am simply making the point that creative people will master certain aspects of their craft but must depend on others to perfect the areas they do not understand. For example, if you are a fabulous singer, you probably don't know anything about mastering your vocals or don't know enough about getting the song to that radio quality. You might be a wonderful songwriter but you don't know how to sing three part harmony for your own recordings. The point is we must listen to our creations with a world perspective and understand that we will continue to evolve if we are open to reviews and re-writes. You will create many productions, sing many songs or write thousands of lyrics with only a few of them being worth pushing foward to your fans. Once you understand this, you will continuously work on your creativity skills for fun. In the midst of your fun, you will eventually create your piece of perfection. |
